Fatal shooting of man robbed captured by camera

The fatal shooting of a man during an apparent robbery captured by surveillance camera, police said.

"It was surreal watching that and extremely disturbing," police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said of the videotape.

Ronald Preston, 44, was shot in the chest early Tuesday at Southside Car Wash, where he had stopped to wash his pickup.

The videotape shows a man driving into an adjacent bay, and a passenger getting out and confronting Preston, McElroy said.

After being shot, Preston ran but collapsed out of view of the camera. The attacker appeared to take property from Preston's truck.

Another customer found Preston's body a few hours later. Police were searching for the gunman. Meanwhile in February 2004, a camera at a car wash in Sarasota recorded the abduction of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia, whose body was found five days later. Joseph Smith, charged with first-degree murder and other crimes, is scheduled to stand trial in November, the AP reports.
