Grenade explosion sparks gunfight in Kashmir

Islamic militants exploded a grenade on a street in the Kashmir's main city of Srinagar, sparking gunfight that left 10 people wounded.

The attackers hurled a grenade at a police jeep and began firing at a security post on Srinagar's Maulana Azad road, said police officer Haseeb Ahmed. As security forces fought back the attack, the militants apparently took refuge in a nearby building, Ahmed said.

At least eight civilians, including six journalists, were wounded in the crossfire. Two soldiers were wounded in the gunfight that was continuing early Friday evening.

The journalists were mostly hit by bullets in the leg, said their colleagues, who were at the scene.

"The situation is tense. The entire area has been cordoned off by paramilitary soldiers and police," S.A. Sayeed, a senior police officer told the AP.
