High voltage wire falls on bus, killing 11 passengers in southern India

A high voltage wire fell on a bus on Wednesday, killing 11 passengers and injuring 15 others in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The passengers died instantly when the wire fell on the state-owned bus in the village of Ponnampally, local police chief V.C. Sajjanar said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the wire to break loose from the electric pole, Sajjanar said.

Three school teachers traveling to work were among those killed, he said.

Ponnampally is about 450 kilometers (280 miles) south of the state capital, Hyderabad.
