A representative of the Headquarters of the Joint Group of Forces in the Northern Caucasus reported that a Russian colonel and his driver had been killed in Chechnya.

"Yesterday, a group of Chechen militants opened fire at a GAZ-3102 vehicle carrying director of operations from the 437th construction department in Khankala Colonel Sergei Batalshchikov and his driver Yevgeny Tereshchenko. Both passengers died from sustained wounds," the source said.

According to his report, the assault on the vehicle occurred on the Germenchuk-Mesker-yurt road, 150 meters from a bridge over the Dzhalka river. "Bandits set up an ambush in front of the bridge and opened automatic fire from both sides of the road," the source revealed.
