Is Arab mercenary gang killed in Chechnya?

One of the Russian Defense Ministry's commando units has killed a group of militants, which was apparently commanded by Arab mercenary Abu Al-Walid, in Chechnya's Vedeno district. This was disclosed to RIA Novosti today by Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for the regional North Caucasus counter-terrorist command centre.

In his words, local residents informed the military that a four-man gang, including Arab terrorist Abu Al-Walid, was staying 5 km from Vedeno district's Neftyanka town.

The locals claimed to have recognised the Arab thug.

It was subsequently decided to land a commando unit from helicopters for the sake of surrounding and killing the bandits, Shabalkin added.

The commando unit spotted the militants at about 6.00 p.m. Moscow time November 17, shooting at them rather intensively; all bandits were killed as a result, Shabalkin said.

Firearms were confiscated, as the soldiers inspected the site of the clash; however, the dead militants didn't have any documents whatsoever. Their bodies were seriously damaged making their identification impossible, Shabalkin added.

A $100,000 reward was offered for the whereabouts of Arab terrorist Abu Al-Walid November 12, 2003. Leaflets with his composite photo were circulated among the population of Chechnya's mountain districts.
