Hijacker of a car of Russian embassy in Sweden sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment

The man who had hijacked a car of the Russian Embassy in Sweden was sentenced to six months of imprisonment and payment of the compensation for the damage, the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

The incident occurred on July 8, 2003. The Swedish citizen intruded into the territory of the Russian diplomatic mission in Stockholm and hijacked the car. The Stockholm city court found him guilty in the abuse of seven articles of the Swedish Criminal Code, including intrusion, threatening, theft, hijacking of the car and infliction of damage to property.

In connection with the incident Moscow expects the Swedish authorities to take measures to provide security of the Russian Embassy in Stockholm. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to the Swedish authorities for the investigation of the hijacking case.

"Thanking the competent Swedish authorities for the investigation of this incident and bringing the guilty person to court, Moscow hopes that the Swedish side will take all the necessary measures to provide security of the Russian Embassy and to prevent unsanctioned intrusions into its territory," reads the statement by the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
