Prosecutors looking into Saturday shooting in downtown Moscow

Prosecutors are looking into a shooting incident that occurred in downtown Moscow last Saturday. The press office for Moscow city prosecutors told RIA Novosti that investigators were probing into appropriateness of use of deadly force by police officers firing at a BMW on Bolshaya Yakimanka.

At 9:10 p.m. Moscow time on May 24, traffic inspectors on Bolshaya Yakimanka, just a stone's throw away from Red Square, where former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney was performing at that time, tried to stop the black BMW. The car did not comply and people in the car fired several handgun shots at the police officers, who returned fire and took measures to stop the vehicle.

The offenders eventually abandoned the car and escaped. Three gunshot holes and some bloodstains were found on the vehicle. The license plates on the BMW were found to be fakes.

Interior Ministry agencies believe that four people were traveling in the car. They were most probably originally from the Caucasus. None have been detained thus far.
