13,000 people left homeless as result of earthquake in Kazakhstan

Nearly 13,000 inhabitants in the southern Dzhambul region of Kazakhstan have been left without a roof over their heads as a result of the earthquake, which occurred on May 23rd, the Dzhambul administration reported on Monday.

The earthquake killed three people. According to the data of the local authorities, altogether about 3,295 dwelling houses, 17 educational and cultural facilities, seven public health facilities and five administrative buildings have been damaged.

In a number of districts in the region practically all the adobe houses have been demolished. The homeless people (at the present time - about 7,000) have been given shelter in tent camps. The authorities are organising deliveries of foods to these people.

According to the preliminary data, the damage from the earthquake amounts to about six million tenge (nearly 40,000 dollars).
