Far Eastern border guards keep fighting violators

Border guards serving with the Russian Federal Frontier Service's Far Eastern regional department have eliminated four illegal-migration channels on Russian territory, as well as seven contraband corridors, since early 2003. This was disclosed here today by Lt.-Gen. Mansur Valiyev in charge of the afore-mentioned regional department at a press conference dealing with Border Guard Day, due to be celebrated all over Russia May 28.

More than 200 violators were detained by our department's border guards already this year, Valiyev noted. 47 Chinese poachers were detained over a two-week period, that is, during operation Amur-Putina (Fishing Season)-2003 that aimed to protect biological resources in the Amur and Ussuri rivers; the authorities confiscated more than 30 kilometers of nets.

The situation along the Far Eastern sector of the Russian-Chinese border is both predictable and stable, Valiyev noted. We maintain good-neighborly and partner-like relations with Chinese border guards, signing more than 20 bilateral documents and agreements in the field of border-control cooperation, Valiyev stressed.
