The female bombers, who blew themselves up by the villages of Belorechye and Ilaskhan-Yurt, had nothing to do with Islam, asserts a statement released by the press service of Akhmad Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen administration. A copy of the document was handed over to RIA Novosti on Thursday.
On May 14th, thousands of believers gathered for a religious feast in a place considered sacred by Orthodox Chechens. "On a day like this, only a Satan's servant could make an attempt on the lives of peaceful people, women, children and the elderly," reads the document, which calls the attempts on the part of Maskhadov's so-called representatives to disclaim the crime "unconvincing." "Not only have these criminals forgotten all about God, they have turned into beasts. They placed themselves above the law and society they live in," point out the authors of the statement.
A powerful explosion set off by a woman kamikaze ripped through the crowd of almost 15,000 people, who had gathered for a religious feast near the villages of Belorechye and Ilaskhan-Yurt. According to the information of the Chechen Emergencies Ministry, the blast killed 16 and injured 145 people. 53 surviving victims were hospitalized, 43 of them in a very grave condition.
Investigators have identified the woman terrorist as Shakhidat Baimuradova, 46. An accomplice, Zulai Abdurzakova, 52, was to have set off yet another explosion, but was killed before she had a chance to use her "suicide belt."
