Russian Interior Minister Declares War on Criminals in Russia's Far East

"The war has been declared on crime" in the Far Eastern region, the Russian Minister of Interior Affairs Boris Gryzlov disclosed to journalists on Friday in Khabarovsk.

However, this war "will be waged within the framework of the law and begins today," the Interior Minister said.

Explaining his statement, Boris Gryzlov said that the level of economic crime in the Russian Far East "borders on arbitrariness." "Traditional methods of combating crime in this case are becoming inefficient," underscored the Minister.

This meeting was preceded by the working trip of Boris Gryzlov and the plenipotentiary representative of the Russian President in the Far Eastern Federal district. Beginning last Sunday and until Thursday they acquainted themselves with the situation and the activities of the law-enforcement bodies in the Amur, Kamchatka and Sakhalin regions and the Maritime and Khabarovsk Territories. The results of the trip were announced at the Collegium session in Khabarovsk.

Boris Gryzlov said that in order to improve the situation, the necessary measures will be taken for specifying and perfecting the articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and legal provisions.

In order to achieve efficiency in the fight against crime it has been decided to organise a close cooperation between all law enforcement bodies, including the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Federal Security Service, the prosecutor's office, frontier guards, customs and other structures. Representatives of these structures took part in the Collegium session.
