Chikurachki Volcano on Paramushir Island of Kurile Range Becomes Active

The Chikurachki volcano of the Kurile Range in Russia's Far East has become active.

Last weekend experts registered a series of ash outbursts to the height of 150 meters from the crater of the Chikurachki volcano, 70 km from the town of Severo-Kurilsk. The outbursts are accompanied by volcanic tremor and ash fall, a RIA Novosti correspondent was told at the Kurile expedition of the local Volcanology Institute.

The ash layer was 2 to 3 cm in the Podgorny village 15 km to the north of the volcano.

Experts say the volcano, its height being 1,816 meters, is not dangerous for the nearby populated areas.
