Internecine war continues in Afghanistan

Al-Qaeda militants and the actions by the Islamic Party of Afghanistan led by former Prime Minister in the Mujahed government of the pre-Taliban period Gulbeddin Hekmatiyar, as well as hostility among local field commanders and the attempts of some neighbour countries to interfere in Afghanistan's home affairs pose the major threat to the process of stabilization in Afghanistan.

Deputy commander of the ISAF Colonel Mustafa stated this in Kabul at a joint meeting of the heads of the Afghan law enforcement departments and representatives of the command of the international peace-keepers.

Speaking about the "neighbour countries", Mustafa referred to Iran which is continually accused by the USA of sheltering militants of Al-Qaeda and Hekmatiyar (after the defeat of his supporters Hekmatiyar, a Pashtoon by nationality, was in emigration in Teheran for a long time). Many Afghan experts hold the view that Iran pursues a "dual policy in Afghanistan", on the one hand, formally declaring its support for the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan, and, on the other, doing its best to prevent establishment of a strong pro-American government in Kabul.
