Chechen police show no bias for nationality

Chechnya's law enforcement bodies are intent on punishing convicts irrespective of their nationality and social status. This statement was made by Russian prosecutor-general Vladimir Ustinov when meeting in Moscow with PACE chairman Lord Judd. Ustinov pointed to such priorities of Chechen law-enforcers as overcoming the high crime rate and complicated socio-economic situation in the republic by re-establishing constitutional law and order. Ustinov familiarised the PACE delegation with progress in searching for the missing and in observance of human rights in Chechnya.

Under review was also investigation into mass burials discovered in Chechnya. According to the Russian side, two versions are under review, including one involving Russian servicemen as a guilty party and that of provocation on the part of Chechen separatists. Facts prove the latter, said Ustinov.
