Russian ambassador to Pakistan: Danger of war between Pakistan and India has been averted

Thanks to the efforts of the international community the danger of war between India and Pakistan has been removed from the agenda of the day, said Russian ambassador to Pakistan Eduard Shevchenko.

The diplomat believes that a great role in achieving this aim was played by Moscow. In particular, he emphasised the importance of Russian President Vladimir Putin's meetings with the leaders of India and Pakistan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pervez Musharraf, at a recent summit in Alma Ata (Kazakhstan).

At the same time, said the ambassador, due to the tension at the Pakistani-Indian border in Kashmir, that region, alongside the Middle East, still remains the planet's "hottest spot".

Nevertheless, the diplomat underscored once more, the international community has succeeded in achieving three main goals. The first and the main one--to receive guarantees from Delhi and Islamabad that there will be no war. Secondly, as the ambassador said, Musharraf and Vajpayee have confirmed that nuclear weapons will not be used under any circumstances. And thirdly, the leaders of the two neighbour countries came out for persevering with the efforts to resolve all disputable problems by peaceful means--through a political dialogue.

The chief task today is to prop these intensions by concrete actions, said Eduard Shevchenko. In the opinion of the Russian diplomat, it is necessary to create conditions for an efficient control at the border in Kashmir. "The line of control must become a peace border," pointed out the Russian ambassador.
