Extremists do not abandon attempts to destabilize situation in Daghestan

Extremist forces do not abandon attempts to destabilize the situation in Daghestan (a republic in the Northern Caucasus that neighbours on Chechnya), said at a meeting of the republic's State Council its Chairman Magomedali Magomedov.

The meeting was attended by Sergei Mironov, chairman of the Federation Council (Upper Chamber of Russia's parliament).

Magomedov said that there are forces in Daghestan which have set themselves the task of preparing and carrying out acts of terrorism. The law-enforcement bodies of the republic "bear a tremendous burden in carrying out their duties," said the head of Daghestan's State Council.

Magomedov believes that in order to strengthen the Interior Ministry bodies and help them carry out their tasks in ensuring law and order in the republic, it is necessary to transfer protection of the administrative border with Chechnya over to the military
