3.5 million dollar bail to be paid for Borodin's release

A decision to transfer five million Swiss francs (3.5 million dollars) as a bail for Pavel Borodin's release will be taken "in the shortest time possible", Ivan Makushok, Borodin's press-secretary, said in a RIA Novosti interview. He confirmed that the sum will most likely be put up by the permanent committee of the Russia-Byelorussia Union. A source in the Russian government had earlier said that the bail would indeed be paid through the permanent committee. State Secretary of the Union of Russia and Byelorussia Pavel Borodin was arrested in New York in January 2001, and early in April of this year extradited to Geneva, where he was indicted on charges of money laundering belonging to a criminal ring. On April 12, 2001, Geneva's prosecution chamber ruled to release the accused for the period of investigation on a 3.5 million dollar bail.
