According to Iranian radio reports, the 20 days of fierce fighting in Basra has been followed by calm and quiet.

Separate lower-power blasts were registered until the dawn of April 8. As of this moment however, reports the radio, the British troops have occupied positions in almost every main street in the city and are controlling them.

There is still no concrete information about the number of casualties among the civilians of Iraq's second largest city. Survivors, however, insist the casualties must be reaching thousands of people.
