Radiation Control During Active Stage Of Kursk Lifting Operation To Be Conducted In Several Directions

The radiation monitoring during the active stage of the Kursk lifting operation is being conducted in several directions, the Russian Naval press service reported on Monday. Igor Dygalo, aide to the Russian Naval Commander-in-Chief, announced that a PRM-K radiation control and monitoring system has been installed on the special pontoon Giant-4. The given system is made of two major units: a surface and a submarine one. The surface unit is a control panel receiving and displaying the radiation monitoring data. The submarine unit comprises 8 detection sensors fastened on the Kursk hull; the sensors have been operating since the start of the submarine's lifting from the sea bottom. Besides, experts from the Academician Krylov Central Research Institute and radiation and chemical security control services of the Northern Fleet are monitoring the control systems operation. While transporting the submarine to the dock, extra radiation monitoring of the water in the wake of the towed special pontoon and the Kursk hull will be conducted on board hydrographic vessels from the Special Expedition Force. After the submarine is put on the PD-50 drydock and dispatched to the Roslyakovo shipyards, the gamma radiation rate in Roslyakovo will be displayed on a special screen installed there.
