Kursk Submarine Raised From Sea Bottom And On Its Way To Sea Surface

The nuclear-powered submarine Kursk has been lifted 5-6 metres above the sea bottom, official spokesman for the Mammoet company Larissa van Seumeren reported. She added that a special rope had to be pushed through under the submarine to raise it from the sea bottom. Larissa van Seumeren announced that the Kursk is being lifted at the speed of about 10 metres per hour. Twenty-six lifting devices attached to the pontoon Giant-4 are being employed in the lifting operation. After the submarine is raised from the depth of 108 metres, it will be fixed under the barge Giant-4. Kept under the barge by grippers, the submarine will be transported to the Roslyakovo docks. If the weather is favourable, van Seumeren thinks, the lifting operation will take two days. But if the weather worsens, the barge with the submarine under it will be towed along the coast and the operation will then take 3-4 days. Afterwards, with the help of Russian-made additional pontoons, the Giant-4 and the Kursk will be raised and delivered to the dry docks.
