Project To Salvage Kursk's First Compartment From Barents Sea Floor To Be Approved

The project to salvage the first compartment of the Kursk nuclear submarine from the Barents Sea floor is planned to be approved late this November, Russian Vice Premier Ilya Klebanov, who heads the commission investigating the cause of the sub's wreck, reported on Tuesday. The Kursk's first compartment will be salvaged from the Barents Sea floor in 2002 by the Russian Navy. At the same time, Klebanov did not rule out that the aforementioned operation could be carried out with the participation of foreign companies, which had been involved in salvaging the sub. According to him, this may happen if Russian experts do not have the necessary equipment. Specifically, it is possibly referring to the equipment needed to erode the sea floor under the first compartment. It is expected that the Russian Navy will lease the equipment or hire foreign experts.
