No Military Operations Were Conducted In Chechnya Since Last Year

No military operations as such were conducted in Chechnya for more than a year, the chief of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces Anatoly Kvashnin told journalists in Brussels. According to Kvashnin, activities in Chechnya are limited to "special operations to track down and destroy separate armed units and bandits," the ones who carry on their "subversive or guerrilla actions." In Kvashnin's opinion, completing the anti-terrorist campaign in Chechnya means creating proper social and economic conditions for the Chechen population and solving the unemployment and living standard problems. The chief of the Russian General Staff came to Brussels on Tuesday to attend the sessions of the Russia-NATO Permanent Joint Council and the Military Committee of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership.
