Tajik Quake Injures 1,500

An earthquake in Tajikistan killed and injured 1,500 to 1,600, say the latest reports of Russia's Ministry of Emergency and Calamity Relief. The town Rogun received only slight damages, unlike four villages close to it, especially Talkhak Chashma, where 90% of houses are in debris. The quake killed three children and injured approximately fifty villages out of a 1,244 population. Quake survivors today received quilts and warm clothes from the International Committee of the Red Cross. Tajikistan's Ministry of Emergency and Calamity Relief and UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, donated a lorry-load of foodstuffs each.
