American and Polish Sappers Wounded During Mine Sweeping Operation on Airfield Near Kabul

An American soldier lost right foot, and a Polish soldier was slightly wounded as a result of a mine explosion at the Bagram airbase near Kabul. The airfield has been on the frontline between Taliban forces and the Northern Alliance for several years.

All minesweeping operations at the airbase are temporarily suspended.

According to the US Military Command representative Roger King, doctors had to amputate the American soldier's foot. After the surgery, he had been transported to a hospital in Germany for further medical treatment.

Last year, sappers cleared more than 7,000 mines from the territory of the base.
