Russian presidential information service on new terror act in Chechnya

Chechen militants "descend to the most brutal deeds abusing the cornerstone ideas of Islam and centuries-old traditions of highlanders." This statement is part of an address released by the Russian Presidential Information Service on Wednesday, following the August 6th terror act in the nearby Shatoi town. Militants blasted and subsequently opened fire on a truck transporting servicemen assigned to the Military Commandant's company. As a result, 10 soldiers were killed, another 8 sustained wounds. All soldiers were Chechen draftees aged 18-20.

The service officials believe that "the way the terror act was committed testifies to the fact that militants have practically no opportunity to carry out large-scale acts of sabotage against the federal forces." "They plant mines and carry out gun attacks deliberately targeting them against civilians," the address reads. The service lays emphasis on the fact that this is the way the militants "are paying back the money they get from international terrorist organisations."
