Russian aircraft carrier loses another fighter jet in Mediterranean Sea

A Russian fighter Su-33 fighter jet of the Admiral Kuznetsov crashed when trying to land on the vessel, officials with the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The plane crashed into the sea while attempting to land on the deck of the aircraft carrier. The  fighter skidded off the deck because of a broken cable.

The message from the department said that the crash occurred on December 3. The pilot of the Su-33 ejected and was thus rescued; his life is out of danger, the Defense Ministry said.

Not that long ago, a Mi-29 deck-based fighter jet of the Admiral Kuznetsov also crashed, but the pilot managed to eject and stay alive as well.

"The Russian aircraft carrier naval group continues operating in the Mediterranean Sea. The flights of deck aircraft continue in accordance with the schedule," officials added.

A special committee was established to investigate the causes of the incidents.

The Kremlin commented on the crash of the Russian fighter jet. According to Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, the most important thing that the pilot remained alive.

"This is a very intense, complex and heroic work. The most important thing is that the pilot is alive," Peskov said in response to a request for comment on the loss of the fighter.
