The press office of the People's Republic of Donetsk said that Kiev troops left four settlements in the Donetsk region, retreating towards the city of Mariupol.
"At the direction of Donetsk, the Ukrainian troops continued to retreat in the direction of Mariupol, leaving the settlements of Granitnoye, Solncevo, Telmanovo and Uspenka," the message said.
Mariupol is a large, 458,000-strong port city in the south of the Donetsk region, on the shores of the Sea of Azov. This is the second largest city in the Donetsk region, where Kiev structures were concentrated after the formation of the People's Republic of Donetsk, RIA Novosti reports.
On Sunday, August 24, the army of the unrecognized People's Republic of Donetsk launched an offensive operation in the southern direction. The militia simultaneously attacked the village of Yelenovka (a southern suburb of Donetsk in the direction of Mariupol) and the positions of the army and the National Guard near the town of Telmanovo and Novoazovsk, on the border of Ukraine and Russia.
