The UN Council on Human Rights in Geneva started considering the state of affairs in Gaza. The countries of the Arab League accuse Israel of committing war crimes and violating international conventions on the treatment of civilians.
Today's meeting at the UN was convened at the request of Egypt. The meeting may end with a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza. In addition, the Council of the UN may set up a committee "to investigate the war crimes of Israel."
In his opening speech, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay (South Africa) said that the fact of Israeli war crimes in Gaza was highly likely. In particular, Pillay named the death of seven children on the beach in Gaza last week. Furthermore, she expressed doubt that Israel had done everything possible to protect civilians.
The commissioner also condemned Hamas militants, who attack Israel, killing innocent Israelis, the BBC said.
