The administration of the People's Republic of Donetsk declared that most law enforcement officers in the region had sided with the republic and were no longer subordinated to Kiev.
"To date, we have all our police with the people, police officers wear ribbons of St. George. They do not obey the Ukrainian authorities,"co-chairman of the Presidium of the People's Republic of Donetsk, Miroslav Rudenko said.
According to him, the Kiev-appointed head of the Donetsk regional administration has no real power in the region. "In our republic, we have not elected the head of state yet, and the institute of the head of the regional administration no longer exists here. This Kiev protege can call himself governor as long as he likes, but he has no real power," Rudenko said.
At the same time, he acknowledged that the Ukrainian border guards stationed on the border with Russia in the region, are still subordinated to Kiev. "The border is closed, but we are working hard to open the border and re-subordinate border guards. This is a matter of the next few days," he said.
On May 11, the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine held referenda on self-determination. As a result of the vote, the People's Republic of Donetsk and the People's Republic of Lugansk were established.
