Civil war in Ukraine: Military take airport near Slavyansk, at least 4 killed

The Ukrainian army took control of the airport in the Ukrainian town of Kramatorsk. During the battle for the airport, at least four local militiamen were killed. Some reports say that the number of victims is eleven. Two more people were injured during the storm of the airfield near Kramatorsk.

Firefighting then stopped. At the airport Kramatorsk, there are about 30 special units of the Ukrainian army, reports Interfax. The airport is 3.4 kilometers far from Kramatorsk.

Kramatorsk is only 20 kilometers far from Slavyansk. It was said that 20 armored personnel carriers and about 500 troops of the Ukrainian army approached Slavyansk.

On the streets of Slavyansk, pro-Russian protesters reinforce barricades, militia fighters prepare for a possible operation to storm the city.

According to acting head of Slavyansk, Vyacheslav Ponomarev, the commander of self-defense battalion, the troops have surrounded the city. Armored vehicles, tanks, armored personnel carriers are concentrated practically in all directions. According to him, roads and main entrances to the city remain under the control of the People's Republic of Donetsk.

At the same time, local militiamen believe artillery can take the high ground, Karachun Mount, and start shelling the city center from the height.
