State of emergency introduced in Kyrgyzstan over mass riots

 

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev signed a decree on Friday to introduce a state of emergency in the Jety-Oguz region of the country where mass riots took place.

In the Issyk-Kul region of the country, the debate about the Kumtor gold highland deposit still continues. On Friday, May 31, people clashed with police. As a result, 15 law enforcement officers and six demonstrators were injured.

Local residents stand for the denunciation of the agreement with Canadian investors and demand more social benefits for the local population. The illegal action that has been going on for four days already has developed into mass riots on May 31st.

To normalize the situation in the region, introduced a state of emergency was introduced in the country through June 10. The territory of the Jety-Oguz district will be under curfew from 6:00 am to 21 pm local time. The head of Kyrgyzstan instructed to ensure thorough investigation into the incident.
