Oscar Pistorius shoots his girlfriend dead on Valentine's Day

South African Paralympic runner on prostheses Oscar Pistorius, 26, is suspected of killing his girlfriend. The athlete has shot her on Valentine's Day, having taken her for a thief, reports News 24.

"I confirm that the 26-year-old suspect should be in court today," police spokesman Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale said.

The victim is Reeva Steenkamp, a model, The AP reports. Her body was found in Pistorius's home. She was 30 years old. The woman was pronounced dead, and the athlete was taken into custody.

"The woman was injured in the head and in the upper part of her body," said Mogale. The police arrived to the house of Pistorius in Pretoria on Thursday morning. A 9mm pistol was found at the crime scene.

Pistorius, who has double below-knee amputations, is the T44 world record holder for the 200 and 400 metres events, and the joint T43 record holder for the 100 metres. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Pistorius became the first double leg amputee to participate in the Olympics when he entered the men's 400 metres race and was part of South Africa's4 × 400 metres relay team. He also took part in the 2012 Summer Paralympics, where he entered the men's 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres races in the T44 classification, and in theT42-T46 4 × 100 metres relay.

He won gold medals in the men's 400 metre race in a Paralympic record time of 46.68 seconds and in the 4 × 100 metres relay in a world record time of 41.78 seconds. He also took a silver in the 200 metres race, having set a world record of 21.30 seconds in the semifinal. He is often referred to as the "Blade Runner" and "the fastest man on no legs."
