US Ambassador to Libya killed because of anti-Islamic documentary

The U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed in Benghazi as a result of a missile strike. Three other officers of U.S. diplomatic structures were also killed in the attack. The website of the embassy says that the diplomat's name was Christopher Stevens. The names and titles of other victims have not been specified yet.

According to Rosbalt, a crowd of Islamists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 12th at night. Reportedly, the attackers were angered with documentary "Innocence of Islam" that appeared on the Internet. The film was made in the U.S. by amateur filmmakers. The area around the embassy and surrounding streets were cordoned off.

The authors of the film showed Muslims and their religion in a highly unflattering light, which sparked a storm of indignation. The angered Muslims attacked not only the American consulate in Benghazi, but also the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. In Cairo, demonstrators removed the U.S. flag from the building of the embassy and replaced it with the flag traditionally used by al-Qaeda.

Hillary Clinton noted in a telephone conversation with the President of the Transitional Government of Muhammad Yusuf al-Makrifom that the U.S. government condemned any deliberate attempt to denigrate the religious beliefs of others." However, she added, from the point of view of Washington, there was no excuse for the action like the attack on the mission in Benghazi, says RBC.
