A package has exploded at the Chilean Embassy in Rome, wounding one person, just hours after another blast at the Swiss Embassy in the Italian capital injured a worker, according to reports.
A Chilean Embassy employee suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he opened the package, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
The Swiss Embassy attack also involved a package that detonated, while a worker was handling it in the mailroom.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini called the Swiss Embassy incident a "deplorable act of violence" against the Swiss, and offered Italy's solidarity with the embassy staff and the injured worker, who suffered serious injuries to both hands, according to CBC.ca
Rome and other Italian cities have been the scene of violent student protests in the last week as Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government attempts to push through legislation that will overhaul the country's university system, according to Bloomberg.
