A crash involving a Greyhound bus en route from Los Angeles to Sacramento killed six people and injured 20 others, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deadly sequence of events began shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday as three young women in a dark-blue Chevrolet Trailblazer were traveling north on California Highway 99 in Fresno.

The Trailblazer made a sharp left turn from the right-hand lane, struck the median rail, rolled over and blocked the fast lane, said CHP Central Division Chief Jim Abrames, The Los Angeles Times reports.

CHP officials said nothing now indicates drugs or alcohol as a factor in the accident, but they haven't been ruled out. The CHP investigation will include a "24-hour profile" on the drivers.

Authorities aren't sure who was driving the TrailBlazer, which apparently began the chain of events as it traveled northbound in the far right lane.

CHP officials say they found skid marks indicating that the TrailBlazer swerved away from an exit sign at the McKinley off-ramp and into the center median. The vehicle rolled and then came to rest across the left and middle lane, Lexington Herald Leader informs.
