Teacher Killed in Suspected Knife Attack in Germany

A teacher was stabbed to death in an attack at a vocational school in the German town of Ludwigshafen on Thursday, police said.

Police also said that a 23-year-old former student had been arrested. The student admitted under questioning that he was angry at the teacher for giving him poor marks.

The 58-year-old teacher was found lying on the stairs of the school with a knife wound. He died at the scene.
The suspect, who was armed with a starter pistol and a combat knife, was overpowered by police who were called to the school, Independent Online reports.

According to Bloomberg, the male teacher died at the scene after police were called soon after 10 a.m. local time to the school in the city of Ludwigshafen, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Frankfurt. Police evacuated the building and found the gunman, who surrendered. The victim was discovered afterwards.

"A man was found on the stairs -- he was still alive, but was very seriously injured," Franz Leidecker, the police chief of the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, told reporters today in comments broadcast live on N24 television. "In the minutes after first aid was applied, he died."

Some 3,200 students attend the technical school Ludwigshafen in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Television footage showed groups of young people clustered outside buildings that had been cordoned off by police. According to police reports, nobody else was injured in the attack, Spiegel Online informs.
