A small airplane crashed just off the airport's ruway in Minnesota. All four people on board were killed.

Federal Aviation Administration investigators were to arrive at the Faribault Municipal Airport on Monday.

The four-seat plane burst into flames and scattered debris across the airfield when it crashed just off the runway on Sunday afternoon.

"There's very little left," Police Chief Dan Collins said. Wind was gusting above 20 mph (32 kph) when the plane went down, but the cause of the crash had not been determined, he said.

FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro said Sunday that officials had not been able to find a flight plan, so they were not sure where the Cirrus SR22 plane came from or where it was headed. The FAA office in Minneapolis did not immediately respond to a message seeking additional information Monday.

A spokesman for the plane's manufacturer, Cirrus Design Corp. of Duluth, declined to comment until after the FAA investigates.

Since 2002, the SR22 has been involved in 17 accidents resulting in 35 deaths, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Faribault is a town of 21,000 roughly 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) south of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
