A group of international scientists led by British experts conducted a new study about the influence of antibiotic drugs on the human body.
The study revealed that even a single course of antibiotics may cause irreversible damage to the bacteria that protect the intestinal microflora.
The results of the study, in which 70 people from the UK and Sweden participated, showed how antibiotic drugs may affect human health in general.
The participants of the study were completely healthy in the beginning of the experiment. They were receiving equal doses of ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, amoxicillin and minocycline. The participants also took special tests every two, four and 12 months after they started taking pills.
Results showed the drugs caused a notable increase in genes associated with antibiotic resistance, while seriously impacting the diversity of microbes in the gut and causing changes still evident months after initial exposure. The study showed that the health-related intestinal bacteria were significantly reduced for up to four months in participants taking clindamycin and up to 12 months in those taking ciprofloxacin. Amoxicillin showed a less dramatic shift in microbial populations, but was the largest contributor to increased antibiotic resistance, NaturalNews.com reports.
