MTV focused on shoking music acts

The lines outside Mansion nightclub on South Beach stream in both directions, like open arms welcoming the dozens of young, sweaty, thirsty partyers eager to get past discerning doormen and burly bouncers. Cars slowly cruise by, occupants gawking at the sexy clubgoers lining the streets.

It's 1 a.m. and a sticky 83 degrees, a typical summer Saturday on South Beach, just east of Miami. But the heat and humidity of what is arguably the worst time of year to come here don't seem to bother those seeking Dionysian pleasures amid the clubs, restaurants and hotels of this cutting-edge hotspot.

While the area's evolution from a wintertime resort to a year-round destination began years ago, lately it seems like every celebrity in the country — from Paris Hilton to Shaquille O'Neal — is hanging out on South Beach.

MTV's decision to hold its Video Music Awards here on Aug. 29 — at the height of hurricane season — is just another sign that the city has come of age. That the awards have been held only in New York or Los Angeles until now even hints at the emergence of a third glam capital — slower paced than New York, less traffic than L.A. — amid the palm trees, pulsing clubs and Cuban food of Miami, reports ABC News.

MTV focused on introducing the hot new music acts to the world with cool veejays. Lately, though, MTV has shown fewer and fewer actual videos on its video channel. It’s a little like the History Channel not showing any more history.

But all is not lost at MTV. Instead of music videos year round, MTV has boiled its identity down to this showcase event, where it invites celebrities from all corners of the entertainment world to serve as performers and presenters. In the process, expletives, nudity and suggestive acts have become as commonplace as Kaballah water in Madonna’s dressing room.

Last year will be remembered for the kisses shared onstage by Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. The stunt was supposed to be scintillating, but it came off as just your basic premeditated lesbian lip-lock among superstar pop divas. Old hat, really. Of course, that didn’t stop MTV. The net doesn’t show too many videos anymore, but it managed to show that clip a few thousand times, informs MSNBC News.
