The Causes Of The Political Crisis In Georgia Lie In Shevardnadze's Policy Of Double Standards

Vadim Gustov, chairman of the committee on CIS affairs of the upper house of the parliament - the Federation Council, called the policy of double standards, pursued by president Shevardnadze in the past few years, the cause of a profound political crisis in Georgia. In recent years, positive political and economic processes have been going in practically all former Soviet republics, said Gustov in an interview with RIA Novosti. "All this is happening against the background of rapprochement with Russia," he said. "Russia acts as a unifying center of CIS countries' economies, because the main production lines and raw materials are concentrated here", recalled the senator. The only exception from the rule is Georgia, where "stagnation in all the spheres of life has led to such a crisis", said Gustov. Today, "practically all sound forces have united in combating international terrorism", he noted. In connection with this, Gustov accused Shevardnadze of "practically covering Chechen terrorists who are causing damage to Russia". Complicated problems, in particular, on North Ossetia, railways, have been accumulating in Georgia. This has led to the current crisis. "If no real changes occur, the current political crisis could only be localized, but not settled", believes Gustov.
