Romanian fatally shot by police in Germany

A Romanian man was shot to death by police as his car was searched Tuesday, police said.

Police said the 27-year-old, whose name was not released, was driving a British-registered car with another Romanian as a passenger.

Officials said they were observing the vehicle in an investigation of suspected manipulation of bank cash machines and credit card forgery and made the decision to search it early Tuesday.

As an officer ordered the car to stop, "a shot was fired from the police officer's weapon," hitting the driver, police said in a statement. They added that it was unclear exactly how that happened and an investigation is under way.

The dead man's companion was detained after several forged bank cards, along with cash, were found in the car.
