Europe is dealing with the threat of an ecological catastrophe. The increase in the average temperature results in the fact that Alpine ice is melting faster. A huge lake has recently appeared in Italy, on the top of the Monte Rosa Mountain, the area of which is 16 hectares; it is 40 meters deep. The new lake is an attraction for tourists, but it alarms local citizens and specialists. Some 200 civil defense workers are operating there, trying to partially drain the lake, allowing the water flow to a local, natural waterfall. This is being done because of fear that the lake could flood local settlements and tourist centers. This work is the first of its kind in Europe; it will last until the end of the week. Specialists say that the glaciers of the European continent lost up to 40% of their volume over the past year.
Global warming is a big threat, not only to the Alps , but also to the Himalayas. This was the conclusion made by UN experts. The United Nations Ecological Program (UNEP) sent a group of mountaineers to study the consequences of global warming. They said that they could see warming vestiges everywhere. UNEP warned that over 40 Himalayan glacier lakes could melt and burst the banks, which will result landslides and floods, posing a major threat to thousands of people. The situation is the same in the Andes. If this continues in the future, then it will not be possible to avoid another Flood.
