Gorbachev and Omar: get out of Afghanistan

Ex-President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev and Taleban leader Mohamed Omar warn the USA to leave Afghanistan now, before it is too late.

Mikhail Gorbachev warned the USA to cease military activity in Afghanistan “as soon as possible” and to leave the country before it is too late, according to an interview published by the Spanish daily El Mundo on October 28th.

Mikhail Gorbachev stated that “The military action against the terrorists, who have a network there, is correct. But it would be a mistake to use this action later to impose a certain solution on Afghanistan. I sincerely hope that this plan does not exist”.

Mikhail Gorbachev, who pulled the Soviet troops out of Afghanistan in 1989 after a ten-year conflict into which the country was being drawn more and more deeply, says that “I think it is necessary to finish the military action as soon as possible and to leave the country rapidly”. He stated that after this, political activity would solve the issues at hand.

Muhamed Omar, the Taleban leader, has declared in an interview on October 28th to the Algerian newspaper El Youm, that the “real war” in Afghanistan is yet to begin and that the US troops will not be “received with flowers” but rather will “receive a much more bitter lesson than the Soviet forces”.
