Carter Tells US to Use UN

As he gave his acceptance speech at the prize-giving ceremony at which he received his Nobel Peace Prize, Jimmy Carter warned the Bush administration that a unilateral attack on Iraq could have “catastrophic” consequences”

“We must remember that today there are at least eight nuclear powers on earth, and three of them are threatening to their neighbours in areas of great international tension,” he declared in Oslo. These three are Israel, Pakistan and India.

He added that if the world’s powerful nations set a precedent, adopting a principle of “preventive war”, there could be a knock-on effect which would spell disaster. He received a standing ovation for his speech as he accepted his cheque for 1.4 million Euros, which he will donate to the Carter Centre in Atlanta, which mediates in international conflicts.
