A 17-year-old sumo wrestler died after a practice session for the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Tokitaizan, whose real name is Takashi Saito, became ill after practicing on Tuesday at the Tokitsukaze stable, Kyodo News Agency reported. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead, Kyodo reported.

Saito entered sumo this spring and was listed in the Nagoya tournament as 39th in sumo's lower rankings.

Many sumo wrestlers intentionally put on weight during their careers in Japan's ancient sport. Sumo stars can weigh as much as 225 kilograms (500 pounds).

The Nagoya tournament will be held from July 8-22.
