Russia's Ministry of Communications is making every effort to prevent anthrax from spreading by mail, minister Leonid Reiman has said. "Luckily, we have had no such incidents so far," he added. Reiman emphasized that his ministry is taking both organizational and technical measures. Specifically, new, special equipment is planned to be bought for post offices. The minister said that postmen both in Russia and the rest of the world are rather vulnerable to the spread of infections. Reiman said further that the mail coming to Russia's federal bodies - ministries, the Cabinet staff, and the Kremlin - apart from checks at post offices undergoes also additional control at the couriers' service or at the main special communications centre. He emphasized that if a letter comes from afar, it is repeatedly checked at all transit points.
