Toxic Cadmium Found in McDonald's Shrek-Themed Collectible Glasses

McDonald’s announced Friday that they will recall some 12 million Shrek-themed glasses after cadmium was found in the paint used in the glasses’ cartoon design.

The 16-ounce glasses, which sold for $2, were collectables tied to the movie’s release last week, sporting one of four characters from the film: Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots or Princess Fiona. The recall notice, posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, told people to stop using the glasses immediately and wait for refund instructions from McDonald’s, TIME informs.

The glasses were part of a promotion by McDonald's linked to the recent release of "Shrek Forever After," the fourth film in the animated movie series.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier," D-Calif., said on her Web site she received an anonymous tip last week claiming cadmium, a toxic substance, was included in the paint on the glasses. She passed the information to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which confirmed the presence of the metal, a known carcinogen that can cause damage to bone, intestines, kidneys and lungs, UPI.com says.
