African foreign ministers express concern at high rate of migration

Nigeria's foreign minister said Monday that the problem of mass migration from the developing world could only be solved if poverty was alleviated in countries experiencing an exodus toward more prosperous nations. Foreign Minister Aichatou Mindaoudou spoke to reporters after meeting with Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency.

Mindaoudou said that youths had to be given prospects in their countries to keep them from looking for greener pastures. Ghanaian Foreign Minister Nana Akufo-Addo said 12,000 well-trained and educated people had left his country in recent years, and called the trend "alarming." The two were representing the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, reports the AP.
