A meeting was held today in Murmansk of the interdepartmental commission on choosing a site for the planned oil port on the Kola Peninsula. Options regarding the construction of an oil pipeline from Western Siberia to Murmansk were also examined at the meeting.
The main contractor for the construction of the pipeline and the oil terminal will be the Starstroi company. Leading oil companies YUKOS, LUKoil, TNK, and Surgutneftegaz intend to build a pipeline system for transporting oil to the Murmansk Region from Western Siberia and oil fields on the Arctic Shelf. The oil companies have determined that the volume of oil handled by the port should gradually be raised to 120 million tonnes per year.
According to Murmansk Region Deputy Governor Vladimir Motlokhov, the most important task at the moment is to provide the project planners with as full and detailed information as possible, so that the eight original options can be whittled down to two or three optimal variants.
