A railway accident happened today in Italy. At least ten people are dead and dozens injured after a rail derailment sparked a massive explosion in north-west Italy.
The accident happened in the Tuscan coastal town of Viareggio.
A freight train travelling from La Spezia to Pisa, and made up of wagons carrying gas, had just passed through Viareggio station when the derailment happened, Euronews reports.
After that two cars filled with liquefied natural gas exploded, setting off an inferno. The cars plowed into several homes just outside the train station in the Tuscan seaside town of Viareggio, and the resulting explosion collapsed a building and set fire to a vast area, The Associated Press reports.
Two nearby buildings collapsed, news agency ANSA said, adding that some of the victims were in them, Reuters India reports.
Survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals in Viareggio – at least 20 people have serious injuries. The search is on for more victims, Euronews reports.
